The seventh year of High Stakes Poker will be displayed on GSN beginning this month, but sadly there have been some modifications and very few of them are excellent. The show will have a new host as Gabe Kaplan who was on the 1st 6 seasons is gone. He’s being supplanted by former Saturday Night Live cast member Norm MacDonald. Kara Scott will still be on the show as a co-host.
Adjustments
GSN is making various other modifications to the show too and they don’t seem good thing either. The show will now include a mixture of pros and amateur participants. High Stakes Poker will still have some top participants like Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan but none of the members of Full Tilt will be on the show. That means plenty of of the top poker participants on the planet will not be on the show this year including Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Eli Elezra and Gus Hansen. The show will still have Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Laak but the loss of top participants will definitely be visible. It looks like High Stakes Poker will be sponsored by PokerStars and they did not want participants wearing Full Tilt attire.
Bellagio
The seventh year of High Stakes Poker was filmed at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. The 3-hour episodes will be displayed on GSN beginning this month. You can even watch the broadcasts in 3D if you have DirecTV despite the fact that I have little idea the reason why you would want to watch poker in 3D.
Downhill
High Stakes Poker isn’t going to be the same. Gabe Kaplan was an excellent host and was highly regarded in the poker network. He was superior in mixture with A.J. Benza but he was still excellent. Norm MacDonald is a comedian who is not a poker expert. Kara Scott was excellent in her part but she isn’t an analyst. The days of receiving insightful poker commentary seem to be over and that is a shame. Gabe is a very excellent poker competitor and understood the high stakes match. He will be missed. Now you are able to just hit the mute button considering you are not going to hear anything insightful from MacDonald. The other issue for High Stakes Poker is the loss of all the Full Tilt participants. Dwan made the show worthy of viewing by himself. He will be missed as will other top Full Tilt pros.
